Believe it or not, Ben Affleck’s preparation to play Batman started years before Batman v Superman. Back in 2009, he teamed up with trainer Walter Norton while getting in shape for The Town. The partnership stuck, and by the time Affleck was cast as Bruce Wayne, Norton was already by his side.
The Goal: A Tank-Like Batman
The studio had outrageous expectations. At one point, they even suggested Ben should look like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. His trainer quickly shut that down and instead set a more realistic goal: make Affleck look and perform like a heavyweight MMA fighter.
That meant he needed to be big, strong, and explosive—not just for looks, but to actually move and fight like Batman while wearing a 70-pound suit on set.
The Training Approach
Ben trained for 15 months before filming began, using what’s best described as functional bodybuilding. This hybrid approach mixed classic bodybuilding, strength training, and conditioning. His workouts followed a clear structure:
-
Warm-Up & Movement Prep
Dynamic stretching, mobility, and light cardio to prime his body. -
Functional Bodybuilding
Heavy compound lifts like deadlifts, pull-ups, farmer’s carries, and dumbbell presses, paired with isolation work to build key muscle groups. -
Conditioning Circuits
High-intensity circuits combining strength moves and cardio machines to boost endurance and strip fat.
Workouts were long—sometimes two hours—and scheduled six days on, two days off. Affleck’s commitment was no joke.
Nutrition
Affleck worked with nutritionist Rehan Jalali to balance his diet. Meals focused on lean proteins like chicken and fish, lots of vegetables, and limited carbs. While this Hollywood approach worked for him, most lifters looking to bulk should lean harder into carbs for size and performance.
The Result
By the time Batman v Superman hit theaters, Ben Affleck had become the biggest, most imposing live-action Batman yet—built like a true heavyweight fighter.
