In 2003, Gerard Butler transformed from an average-looking guy into King Leonidas—the ripped leader of the Spartan 300. It took him seven months of intense training, strict dieting, and possibly some chemical help to get into legendary shape. Let’s break down how he did it, and how you can train like a Spartan yourself.
The Training Approach
The studio brought in celebrity trainer Mark Twight, founder of Gym Jones, who would later train Henry Cavill for Man of Steel. His approach for 300 was brutal: high-volume, high-intensity circuits that looked a lot like CrossFit. These workouts combined barbell lifts, bodyweight training, gymnastics, and conditioning.
For the cast, this style was perfect. They needed to get lean, athletic, and battle-ready fast. While not the most effective way to build pure muscle, CrossFit circuits created the shredded, functional look needed for the movie.
The 300 Workout
One of the most famous parts of the prep was the “300 Workout,” a grueling test that actors and stuntmen had to complete. It totaled 300 reps across exercises like pull-ups, push-ups, and deadlifts, all performed with minimal rest. This forged not just their physiques, but their mental toughness and camaraderie—mirroring the brotherhood of the Spartans themselves.
The Diet
Training was only half the battle. Mark Twight controlled what the actors ate as well. Meals were mostly whole foods: lean proteins, vegetables, and healthy starches. Most cast members ate as little as 1,800–2,000 calories per day—extremely low given the training volume. The goal was to strip fat quickly and reveal muscle.
Gerard Butler had more time than the rest—seven months instead of four—because he also needed to pack on size. He ate big, trained hard, and leaned down right before filming to reveal his physique.
Steroid Speculation
Was it natural? While Butler’s 300 physique is absolutely achievable naturally, the short timeline raises eyebrows. He gained significant muscle in under a year and then quickly lost it after the role, which often suggests anabolic use. Still, the end result—a lean, muscular body with visible abs—is a realistic long-term goal for anyone.
