Jon Bernthal didn’t just want to look like Frank Castle — he wanted to feel the pain, grit, and isolation that define the Punisher.
He walked for hours at night across the Brooklyn Bridge with a backpack full of weights, ate nothing but lean meat and vegetables, and refused to take shortcuts. Even when he broke his hand filming the iconic prison fight scene in Daredevil, he finished the scene without stopping.
That same mindset shaped his training — and it’s why his Punisher prep wasn’t about aesthetics alone. It was about building real strength, fight endurance, and mental toughness.
Morning Strength & Conditioning
Jon started his day early with a hybrid resistance workout designed to make him brutally strong and resilient:

Big lift first — squats, deadlifts, or bench press (5×3 heavy). This built raw power and durability.

Functional bodybuilding supersets — compound movements paired back-to-back with little rest. This built muscle and pushed his conditioning at the same time.

Metabolic circuit finisher — 20 minutes of AMRAP training (pull-ups, cleans, kettlebell swings, med ball slams). This left him gassed but fight-ready.
This style gave him strength, a solid physique, and an engine that could handle Punisher-level action.
Fight Training & Combat Skills
Afternoons were all about fighting. Jon boxed almost every day and mixed in Brazilian jiu-jitsu to sharpen his grappling and keep his body explosive from head to toe. He constantly drilled fight choreography and weapons handling, which he said felt like workouts themselves.
By combining heavy lifting, intense circuits, and combat sports, Jon built a body that could fight hard, move dynamically, and stay dangerous under pressure.
